new years
Jeff came into town and one morning we made Eggs Benedict, except with real bacon instead of the fake Canadian variety. Also, a slice of pineapple.

Chicago! I don’t have enough shelf space for my books so they‘re all in boxes indefinitely. I also have bunches of other boxes to unpack.
But we cooked breakfast this morning anyway. We couldn’t find a pepper grinder so Dan crushed pepper corns with the bottom of a bottle. It was a good breakfast, a fried egg and a piece of thick bacon over sauteed spinach, parmesan and toast.

The last burger-off produced the superiorist burgers (but notice—superior food photography now, this picture kicks ass).

Yesterday we ate a series of different foods for dinner. First were Penn Station fries and Manhattans. Second came fresh artichokes and super nintendo. And then we had some pot stickers. This is the food of a college graduate.
So far today I’ve had bacon steaks and some blueberries. I hope things get healthier, because I doubt they could improve otherwise. This afternoon’s schedule:
On Saturday I graduated from college.
This means I will probably be writing fancier, however I graduated with a degree in spanish so my english is not going to be any better. I ate very unhealthily over the weekend because of graduation. I decided I needed to wean myself back onto vegetables and so had some grapes this afternoon. For dinner I had bacon steaks with August, my new roommate. They were tasty.

Rachel and Jeff were over drinking wine on my porch couch.

My burger.

August’s burger
On Tuesday night the second burger-off occurred. We were going to make breakfast burgers with eggs and find a way to make it very breakfasty but it got late and I was tired. I didn’t put anything in my burger meat other than salt. It tasted great. I don’t know if August put anything in his but it tasted pretty good too. I am not sure after this test why people put lots of things in their burger meat.

Sometime over the weekend I decided that I was tired of eating. I didn’t stop eating, I just stopped enjoying it. And the kitchen was messy which is proven to scare me away from productivity. This morning I cleaned but I didn’t cook anything spectacular, in fact I almost cooked something but decided I wanted to leave the kitchen clean instead of messy. This is bacon with some vegetables and rice and almonds.
This is what Jamey termed “rustic” cuisine because it isn’t too concerned with presentation. This was a small dinner party with Jeff, Rachel, Jamey and August.

Appetizers toasted Ezekiel bread with olive oil and various cheeses. Boar sausage is from Spain via Jungle Jim’s and is one of the best, richest things I have ever tasted.

Hand made pasta from semolina flour and eggs. Spinach for the green clumps, sun-dried tomatoes for the red ones. The sauce is a bit of lard (one of my favorite ingredients, despite the fact that I store it in the freezer and so only can chip off negligible bits when I use it), bacon, ground beef (all meat from Dishman’s), onions, a large can of peeled tomatoes, 3 chopped up fresh tomatoes, wine, pepper flakes and heavy cream. Salad was some local greens and an excellent dressing of mysterious composition. I think it had hot sauce in it.

Brownie is a recipe from a cookbook that is only eggs, flour, vanilla, brown sugar and chocolate and makes the densest and tastiest brownies imaginable. Cream cheese in some weird variety I found at Jungle Jim’s.

Drink is rye whiskey, sugar, bitters and a bit of mango. The mango was rotten and didn’t impart a nuanced or positive flavor so we put in grapefruit. This made it taste like grapefruit, which is good.
